A gravel drive fails from the bottom up. We start by stripping the sod and soft topsoil off the path of the drive. The mini excavator cuts the shape and the track skid steer levels it out. Then we crown the center so water sheds to both sides instead of pooling in a wheel track. Ditches or a shallow swale run alongside where the ground calls for it. Base stone goes down first and gets rolled tight. Surface stone tops it off and gets spread to an even depth. The finished drive sits a little proud of the ground around it.
Depth is what most drives are missing. A thin skim of stone over soft dirt pushes down into the mud the first wet week. We put enough base under a drive that the stone has something to lock into. On the flat ground around Marion, that base does more work than the top layer does. Where the drive crosses a low spot, we build the grade up rather than dip through it. A culvert goes in where a ditch has to pass under. Getting that right at the county road is what keeps the front end of a drive from washing out.
Marion sits about 69 feet above sea level on flat coastal plain. Water here does not run off fast because there is very little fall to work with. The Great Pee Dee runs down the west side of the county. The Little Pee Dee runs down the east. Ground near those rivers stays soft long after a storm passes. Catfish Creek drains part of the area right around the city. A drive built on that kind of ground needs its water sent somewhere on purpose. Otherwise it sits in the ruts and works the stone down into the mud.
Marion County has taken serious flooding in the last decade. Hurricane Matthew dropped about 17 inches of rain in October 2016. Hurricane Florence followed in September 2018. Both storms brought federal disaster declarations for the county. Drives with no crown and no ditch came apart in both of them. When we rebuild one, the shape of the ground gets fixed before any new stone goes down. Adding gravel over a flat, rutted base just buries the problem for a season. We cut the ruts out, then re-crown the drive before stone goes back on.
About a third of the housing in Marion County is manufactured homes. A lot of those sit well back off the road on family land. The drive to them can run several hundred feet through a field or a pine stand. Long drives take more base and more attention to where the water goes.
